New Delhi: Amid rising tomato prices in the country, restaurant chain McDonald’s has also decided to remove the humble veggie from its food menu.
Several social media users took to their Twitter accounts to share a McDonald’s message board stating that due to insufficient supply of the veggie, the restaurant chain was forced to temporarily remove it from their menu.
“Dear customers, we are always committed to serving you the best food with the best ingredients. Despite our best efforts, we cannot get enough tomatoes that pass our world-class stringent quality tests. So we are forced to serve you products without tomatoes for the time being, ” reads the notice posted outside McDonald’s outlets in the national capital.

McDonald’s is removing tomatoes from its menu due to rising tomato prices. These restaurants charge a lot of money, so they can’t afford it? If they don’t use tomatoes, will they lower the price of their food? pic.twitter.com/czz1gvqf63— Shekhar Sudhakar Damle (@damle_shekhar) July 7, 2023
An IANS report yesterday noted that tomato prices rose from Rs 15 per kg in the first week of May to a staggering Rs 120-150 per kg in various regions across the country.
Wholesalers say vegetable prices have doubled in a week and sales have dropped by 40 percent.
Meanwhile, online vegetable selling apps have also hiked prices and Blinkit is selling tomatoes at Tk 150 per kg, bottle gourd at Tk 61 for 400g-600g.
The recent surge in tomato prices has been attributed to the impact of heavy rains on the supply chain. Vegetable sellers and wholesalers are pointing to the rains as the main reason for disrupting the supply of tomatoes, leading to a significant increase in the retail price of this important kitchen staple.
